Running Scared: Resources for Dealing With Worry, Fear, & Anxiety

Jason VanDorstenEvent Updates, ResourcesFebruary 4, 2011 Leave a comment0

Thanks again to all who were able to attend the RE:NEW 2011 Conference featuring Ed Welch. The leadership of Reston Bible was greatly encouraged by the turnout and we pray that the conference content would be of great benefit to all of us in our walks with Christ. We hope you have been able to process and implement some of the things God brought before you during that time.

Since fear and anxiety are things we all deal with, let us recommend some reading resources that will help strengthen you for the battle. Included here are several books and studies that were mentioned during RE:NEW, as well as others that have been hand-picked by RBC staff. These resources are available in the RBC Bookstore. (Our bookstore is not-for-profit and open between Sunday services.)

Running Scared: Fear, Worry & the God of Rest by Ed Welch This comprehensive primer on the topic of fear, worry, and the rest of God will have readers retreating to scripture for invariable constancy, stalwart care, and robust comfort, instead of – as Welch terms it – “hitting the default switch” by responding with characteristic human independence, control, and self-protectiveness.

When I Am Afraid: A Step-By-Step Gude Away from Fear and Anxiety by Ed Welch This study companion to the book Running Scared offers meditations and studies that will guide worriers through the lifelong process of finding hope, peace and rest in Christ.

Depression: A Stubborn Darkness by Ed Welch Compassionate and compelling, this book lays out issues and answers with Welch’s world view that faith needs to be interlaced with therapies and medication for conditions categorized as strictly clinical. The author weaves in questions scattered throughout the book to help the reader interact with the content and also offers suggestions for those who have loved ones struggling with depression.

A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by Phillip Keller As a shepherd, Phillip Keller shares his insights into the life and character of sheep—and of the Good Shepherd who loves and cares for them. This beloved classic will give new meaning to the ageless Shepherd Psalm, enriching your trust in and love for the Lord who watches closely over you.

Calm My Anxious Heart: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Contentment by Linda Dillow Although many Christian women say they trust God, their lives are filled with worry and anxiety – about their children, their finances, their relationships, their jobs.  This book and twelve-week study helps women grow in contentment as they address the barriers to contentment and how to overcome them.

How People Change by Paul Tripp & Timothy S. Lane What does it take for lasting change to take root in your life?  This book explains the biblical pattern for change in a clear, practical way you can apply to the challenges of daily life. But change involves more than a biblical formula: you will see how God is at work to make you the person you were created to be. That powerful, loving, redemptive relationship is at the heart of all positive change you experience.

Overcoming Fear, Worry and Anxiety by Elyse Fitzpatrick This book offers practical advice for conquering the paralyzing emotions many women encounter as they battle difficult, often overwhelming concerns about rebellious children, problems in the workplace or home, health issues, financial difficulties, and more.

Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges Have Christians become so preoccupied with the major sins of our society that we have lost sight of our need to deal with our own more subtle sins? This book addresses a dozen clusters of specific “acceptable” sins that we tend to tolerate in ourselves – such as jealousy, anger, pride, unthankfulness, and anxiety.
