Abounding in Hope, Part 1: The Desperate Need of All People

September 3, 2023 Jim SuppSermonsHebrews, Romans

Hope is the confident trust in the promises of God about that which is yet to take place. The need for hope is universal, begins with godly fear, and walks the road of biblical lament.

Abounding in Hope, Part 1: The Desperate Need of All People

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

  1. What stood out to you from this message?
  2. Discuss the biblical definition of hope in contrast to the worldly perspective. In your personal journey, how well have you been able to maintain focus on the biblical definition?
  3. Discuss the notion that the church is set in the context of the culture in which we live. How have you seen or experienced ways that culture has influenced our perspective on hope?
  4. Share your personal perception of “the fear of God.”  Are there ways that your perception should align to a more biblical view of fearing God?
  5. Have you ever been angry at God? Did it resolve? Why or why not? What are the results of not moving away from anger?
  6. Review the four steps of a lament outlined in Psalm 13 (Turn to God – Psalm 13:1, Bring Your Complaint – Psalm 13:2, Ask Boldly for Help – Psalm 13:3-4, Choose to Trust – Psalm 13:5-6). Identify, read and discuss a different Psalm of Lament as it relates to these steps.
  7. How is lament distinct from merely grieving or complaining? Why is it important to know the difference? Discuss what it would mean to be apply biblical lament in your own life.
  8. What might you do differently in your own walk with Christ this week because of this message?
