Colossians, Part 9: Be Wise and Be Humble

March 14, 2021 Mike MinterSermonsColossians

Humility is far more powerful than pride and can break down the barriers that pride sets up. When we are wise unto salvation and humble about sharing the gospel with others, they will likely be more receptive to hearing the truth of what the gospel is and what it isn’t.

Colossians, Part 9: Be Wise and Be Humble

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

  1. What was one thing in this message that you found particularly encouraging, beneficial, or challenging?
  2. Read and discuss Colossians 4:2-6. What are Paul’s main points here? How does this fit in with the rest of the letter up to this point?
  3. What does it mean to “devote” or “continue steadfastly in prayer” (Colossians 4:2, ESV)? What else do you note about prayer in this section? How is prayer tied to the gospel?
  4. Do you find prayer to be an “easy” spiritual discipline? Why or why not?
  5. Why should Christ-followers be thankful (v. 2)?
  6. What is the “mystery of Christ” (v. 3)? Why does Paul use the word “mystery”?
  7. What is the importance of making the gospel “clear” (v. 4)? In what ways are verses 5-6 tied to this? Why is it important to know what the gospel is not, as well as what it is?
  8. How does knowing someone’s story or context help us to “walk in wisdom” with those with differing beliefs (v. 5)?
  9. How would you describe your speech to others (v. 6)?
  10. Consider Pastor Mike’s statement, “The gospel is best communicated when the conviction of those who believe it can be observed by those who don’t. Few people will read a sacred text; everyone will read our lives.” What do you think people “read from your life? Where are you doing well? What adjustments do you need to make?
