2 Thessalonians: The Day of the Lord, Part 3

May 23, 2021 Jason VanDorstenSermons2 Thessalonians

Even when we struggle to be faithful in the Word, in prayer, or in honoring the Lord, He remains faithful. God is never dismayed or discouraged by our unfaithfulness. His faithfulness, not ours, is the keystone element of the gospel.

2 Thessalonians: The Day of the Lord, Part 3

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

  1. What was one thing in this message that you found particularly encouraging, beneficial, or challenging?
  2. Read and discuss 2 Thessalonians 3. What stands out to you in this chapter and why? What are some things you note about Paul’s view of and care for the local church?
  3. What particular theological error had crept into the Thessalonian church? How can we guard against theological error today in our church?
  4. Read 1 Thessalonians 2:13-14 and Romans 10:13-15 as you consider Paul’s statement “as happened among you” (2 Thesslaonians 3:1). In what way are you (individually) and we (as a church) part of a “beautiful chain” of expediting and honoring the Word of God? Who first made Jesus known to you? To whom have you made Jesus known?
  5. In what ways are we surrounded by those who oppose God’s Word? Why should be not lose hope or grow weary?
  6. How did some in the Thessalonian church fail to distinguish between patience and passivity? How can avoid a similar error?
  7. Consider how Paul points to himself as an example (v. 7-10). As you consider your work ethic, would you be comfortable saying with Paul, “imitate me, remember my example”? Why or why not?
  8. Consider Paul’s example in v. 9. Are there areas where you have taken up your personal rights but need to set them aside, because in taking them up, your example no longer points to Jesus?
  9. The issue at hand for some of the Thessalonians was unwillingness (not their inability) to work. In the context of our church, are there biblical mandates that we are are neglecting or refusing to do, not because we are unable, but because we are unwilling?
  10. Consider Paul’s encouragement to not grow weary (v. 13). What makes you weary? How do you need to trust God for steadfastness in doing those good things He calls us to do?
