International Connection is the English as a Second Language (ESL)
program at RBC. We are committed to creating a place where internationals
are welcomed and cared for. We seek to provide not only quality English
teaching but also opportunities to experience true Christian community.
Friendships are nurtured, needs are met, and students are challenged to
progress in their journey towards a relationship with Christ.
We offer English instruction to adults in 90-minute classes ranging in
proficiency from basic to advanced. We also provide free childcare for
students with preschool children and offer a Homework Club during evening
classes which provides tutoring for the grade school children.
Over the past year, we had roughly eighty-five students enrolled in the
program with over twenty teachers and other volunteers involved. This
past year, aside from English classes, we offered a variety of events
and activities for our students. These included our annual Thanksgiving
Banquet, the Christmas Candlelight Service, fire safety workshops, and
the Cultural Extravaganza, our celebration of all cultures represented in
the program.
During the summer, the Conversation Partners program paired ESL
students with RBC attendees for an hour of natural conversation a week
for at least 6 weeks. This was a huge success in terms of getting church
members involved in the ministry and giving them a vision for reaching out
to internationals in our community. We also offered an ESL Bible study
using “The Hope” DVD and its study guide.
